Disappearing Doors

Well I am so excited because this post is inspired by my very own DIY project that struck me like lightning last night. I've been wanting to get a quote for custom cabinetry in our home for awhile but things have been so busy I haven't gotten around to it. It's a HUGE item on my teuxdeux list as we need storage in that room badly. I was at the Habitat ReStore last night for my weekly volunteering and I stumbled up on the perfect storage solution! I've walked past it for months but all of a sudden it clicked. But more on that later - this post isn't even about the cabinetry! In order to achieve the clean architectural look I'm going for I would like to change the existing doors from bi-fold into pocket doors. YES! That's exciting! And with my new DIY idea I might even be able to use a wall mounted pocket door, aka barn style door. AND I am planning to reuse existing doors so what better way to "Use what I have" AND use what was donated?

Below are some drool-worthy pocket doors.

These are so wonderful because as the name indicates they just slide into the wall and disappear! These are great for small spaces or areas with lots of doorways. You can still hang artwork and place furniture on either side of the wall since the door won't block it or slide over it.

But as with all things they are not a solution for every situation. These pocket doors would not work well on outside walls since you need to keep them insulated. And depending on plumbing, electric, and other typical house fixtures there may be some limitations. So that's why the barn style doors are a great alternative. They've really been trending over the past few years because they offer the same space saving benefits plus the opportunity to customize the door since it doesn't have to be certain dimensions to fit into the wall.

If you look around your home long enough you may see several opportunities to add pocket & barn doors yourself! I'm so excited about this project, especially because I didn't think we'd get around to it for several years. Today I'm going to do my research and make sure everything will work as I plan. And I hope that my pieces will still be at the Restore! That's the crucial part really... I hope to have some good updates for you soon so wish me luck!

i have been looking all over ever since I saw the first of these "barn" doors pinned. Thank you for posting a whole page full! These are great, and the prices have been surprisingly low for the kits and/or pieces. It's in the craftsmanship. Thanks Again! Good luck hunting.
